法務担当/ Legal Counsel

A multinational insurance company is looking for a Legal Counsel. The selected candidate will independently manage complex legal matters, advise business stakeholders, support insurance licensing and regulatory authorisation initiatives, and collaborate with the regional and global legal team.

Responsibilities:

• Provide day-to-day legal advice on insurance, regulatory, commercial, and corporate matters
• Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, including broker, vendor, outsourcing, IT, service, intra-group, and reinsurance agreements
• Support insurance licensing, regulatory approvals, and authorisation processes in Japan
• Prepare and review regulatory submissions, policies, governance documents, and materials for the Financial Services Agency and other regulators
• Advise on insurance regulations, consumer protection, competition law, corporate law, and regulatory requirements
• Support new product launches and business initiatives from a legal and regulatory perspective
• Manage corporate governance activities, legal entity matters, and governance documentation
• Manage litigation, arbitration, regulatory investigations, and significant disputes in coordination with external counsel
• Collaborate with regional and global legal teams on cross-border projects and multinational initiatives
• Monitor legal and regulatory developments and assess their impact on the business
• Identify legal and regulatory risks and recommend appropriate mitigation measures
• Support the improvement of legal processes, templates, and governance frameworks

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree or above in law or equivalent legal qualification
• 7-10 years of relevant legal experience in the insurance industry, financial services, an international law firm, or a multinational corporation
• Strong knowledge of Japanese commercial and regulatory law
• Strong understanding of insurance licensing, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance requirements in Japan
• Experience advising on insurance regulatory matters and interactions with regulatory authorities
• Experience drafting and negotiating contracts independently
• Native level Japanese; business level English

Preferred requirements:

• Experience within a multinational property and casualty insurance company
• Experience supporting insurance licensing, establishment of regulated entities, and regulatory interactions with the Financial Services Agency
• Experience participating in insurance company start-up, market entry, or regulatory authorisation projects
• Knowledge of reinsurance, distribution regulations, and claims-related legal matters
• Experience supporting data privacy, technology, cybersecurity, or AI-related initiatives
• Experience working within a matrixed multinational organisation
• Possess a valid Bengoshi qualification or overseas legal qualification
