TOKYO, JAPAN - Specialist recruitment firm Robert Walters Japan unveils key insights into the experiences and expectations of LGBTQ+ individuals, diversity and inclusivity in the Japanese workplace through its latest survey*.
The Importance of Diversity and Inclusivity
The survey asked respondents to rate the importance of working for a company that actively promotes diversity and inclusivity, particularly for LGBTQ+ individuals, on a scale of 1 to 10. A significant 43% rated it a perfect 10, highlighting the critical importance placed on inclusive corporate cultures. Only 5% rated it as low as 1, indicating a widespread preference for workplaces that prioritize diversity and inclusivity. This trend is consistent with data from the Japan LGBT Research Institute, which shows an increasing awareness and demand for inclusive policies among Japanese employees.

Key Factors in Job Selection
When deciding to join a company, respondents highlighted several key factors. While salary and benefits remained the top priority for 56% of respondents, 50% emphasized the importance of joining a company that values and acts on diversity and inclusion. Company culture (41%) and work-life balance (37%) were also significant factors. These preferences align with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's findings, which emphasize the growing significance of workplace diversity and inclusion initiatives in attracting top talent.
Experiences of Discrimination and Bias
Despite progress, the survey revealed that 50% of respondents had experienced discrimination or bias in the workplace. The discrimination was reported across various factors, with age (46%), sexual orientation (44%), and gender identity (37%) being the most prevalent. This is in line with a report from the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, which also highlights persistent discrimination issues in Japanese workplaces.
Supportive Measures for LGBTQ+ Individuals
Respondents identified several measures that companies can implement to better support LGBTQ+ individuals. Gender-neutral facilities (41%), public and active support of the LGBTQ+ community (42%), and HR policies such as non-discrimination policies (37%) were among the most valued initiatives. These findings are echoed by the Japan Human Rights Council, which advocates for practical steps to enhance LGBTQ+ inclusivity in corporate environments.
Support for Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage
An overwhelming majority (83%) of respondents expressed support for legalizing same-sex marriage in Japan. This sentiment is reflective of global trends and aligns with findings from the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) report, indicating a broad acceptance and push for LGBTQ+ rights worldwide.
Joshua Bryan, Senior Director of Financial Services, Legal, HR & Support at Robert Walters Japan’s Tokyo office, commented, "Our survey sheds light on the experiences of LGBTQ+ professionals in Japan and underscores the importance of creating inclusive workplaces. By comparing our findings with global trends, we can identify common challenges and work towards fostering environments where all employees feel respected and valued."
