A foreign energy company is looking for a Project Developer. Th chosen candidate will support the full lifecycle of renewable energy projects in Japan, from project origination and initial feasibility assessment through development, financial close, and the start of construction.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify potential solar, onshore wind, and battery energy storage development opportunities
  • Evaluate acquisition, co-development, and greenfield development opportunities
  • Conduct preliminary screening of proposed projects and development sites
  • Assess project location, land conditions, grid availability, permitting requirements, development status, and commercial potential
  • Support the preparation and negotiation of letters of intent, exclusivity arrangements, and development agreements
  • Identify and assess suitable project sites
  • Coordinate initial site investigations and development feasibility reviews
  • Review land ownership, lease conditions, access rights, easements, and other property-related matters
  • Negotiate with landowners and coordinate land lease or purchase arrangements
  • Identify potential land access, title, environmental, or community risks
  • Coordinate technical, commercial, legal, financial, and environmental feasibility assessments
  • Review project scale, expected generation, site constraints, grid connection, construction requirements, and development schedule
  • Identify key assumptions, risks, dependencies, and opportunities
  • Work with engineering teams and consultants to assess preliminary project design and technical viability
  • Support initial cost estimates and project economics
  • Evaluate whether projects meet internal investment and development criteria
  • Recommend whether opportunities should proceed to further development, be restructured, or be discontinued
  • Identify the permits, approvals, consultations, and notifications required for project development
  • Coordinate with national and local government authorities
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of Japanese renewable energy regulations and market frameworks
  • Coordinate environmental, forestry, agricultural land, development, construction, and other relevant procedures
  • Identify regulatory risks and develop practical mitigation plans
  • Coordinate grid connection applications and discussions with relevant utility companies
  • Review available grid capacity, connection requirements, timelines, and associated costs
  • Work with technical teams to confirm project capacity and connection specifications
  • Identify grid-related risks that may affect project schedule or economics
  • Ensure that grid connection assumptions are accurately reflected in project plans and financial models
  • Support the drafting, review, and negotiation of development-related contracts
  • Assist with project acquisition and co-development transactions
  • Support the preparation and review of project financial models
  • Conduct sensitivity analyses and evaluate the impact of schedule, cost, generation, and pricing changes
  • Work with finance and investment teams to assess project economics
  • Support project valuation and acquisition analysis
  • Support projects through investment approval and financial close
  • Support the development of renewable energy projects intended for corporate power purchase agreements
  • Assist in aligning project schedules, generation profiles, pricing assumptions, and contractual structures with customer needs
  • Participate in discussions with prospective corporate electricity buyers
  • Support negotiations and documentation through contract execution

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business administration, finance, economics, law, environmental studies, or a related field (Master’s is advantageous)
  • 5-7 years of professional experience in renewable energy project development or a closely related field
  • Experience developing solar, wind, battery storage, or other infrastructure projects in Japan
  • Experience supporting projects from origination through development and toward financial close
  • Knowledge of the Japanese renewable energy market, including relevant policies, regulations, permitting requirements, and commercial structures
  • Experience coordinating with Japanese landowners, government authorities, utility companies, development partners, consultants, or contractors
  • Strong project management and organisational skills
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Native level reading and writing Japanese; business level English

Preferred Requirements:

  • Proven experience developing renewable energy projects from origination through financial close
  • Experience in utility-scale or commercial and industrial solar development
  • Experience in onshore wind or battery energy storage development
  • Knowledge of corporate power purchase agreement structures
  • Understanding of electricity markets, grid connection processes, and renewable energy regulations in Japan
  • Experience with land acquisition, lease negotiations, and project site control
  • Experience coordinating environmental studies and development permits
  • Understanding of project finance principles and financial modelling
  • Experience supporting project acquisitions, transactions, or investment committee approvals
  • Familiarity with engineering, procurement, and construction processes
  • Experience working with international teams or foreign-affiliated companies
  • Experience managing external development partners, consultants, or advisers
  • Strong commercial negotiation and contract-management capabilities
