Protecting yourself from recruitment scams

The recruitment sector has recently seen an increase in job scams and impersonation attempts, where people pretend to work for reputable recruitment firms in order to deceive and scam jobseekers.

There have been reported instances of scammers reaching out on LinkedIn, WhatsApp, calls, email and other communication channels claiming to have job opportunities, but in fact they are trying to deceive job seekers into paying money, divulging personal information or providing free labour.

Scammers may:

  • Use lookalike email addresses or fake domains
  • Create fake job ads
  • Pretend to be recruiters via email, calls, WhatsApp or LinkedIn

We have taken active steps to verify our identity across platforms and protect job seekers from falling victim to these scams, and we are working to help job seekers understand and identify scam recruitment messages.

How to know that you’re speaking to a legitimate Robert Walters employee

LinkedIn

When engaging with Robert Walters on LinkedIn, there are a few steps you can take to confirm that the individual you are communicating with is a legitimate Robert Walters recruiter.

All our employees are verified with a tick box next to their name and details, in the ‘About this profile’ section.

You can also find more information here:

Email

We only send official communication from a verified set of email domains. Any email coming from a different domain – even if it looks similar – is not legitimate and should be treated as suspicious.

Official email domains we use:

The following domains are official and authorised for communication from our team:

  • @robertwalters.com
  • @robertwalters.com.vn
  • @robertwalters.com.hk
  • @robertwalters.co.kr
  • @robertwalters.co.jp
  • @robertwalters.co.id
  • @robertwalters.com.au
  • @robertwalters.co.nz
  • @robertwalters.com.tw
  • @robertwalters.com.my
  • @robertwalters.com.sg
  • @robertwalters.co.th
  • @robertwalters.com.cn
  • @robertwaltersconsulting.co.nz
  • @talentsource.rs

Gmail and Yahoo

We also use an email verification specification called BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) so that our logo and a blue tick appears on emails sent to your Gmail or Yahoo account. This is being rolled out to more email providers.

The email verification we use, deploying DMARC protection, means that authentication checks have been done and ensures our domain has not been impersonated, giving you assurance that emails with the correct logo and blue tick are legitimate emails.

If you receive an email from Robert Walters to your Gmail or Yahoo account, you’ll see our Company logo with a blue tick on the side that says: “The sender of this email has verified that they own robertwalters.com and the logo in the profile image.”

You can also find more information here:

Apple verification

All official Robert Walters emails in the Mail app on Apple devices and iCloud Mail on the web will show our official logo, because we have configured Branded Mail in Apple Business Connect – this gives us the ability to add our brand logo and name to our business emails.

If you receive an email from Robert Walters to your iCloud or Mail app, you’ll see our company logo with a blue tick on the side that says: This message was certified as coming from the owner of the logo and domain “RobertWalters.com”.

Apple uses the BIMI standard, including Verified Mark Certificates (VMC), for verification.

You can also find more information here:

WhatsApp

Individual recruiters will only communicate with you on WhatsApp after they have engaged with you on one of the channels above and you both have each other’s phone numbers. If you do receive any direct outreach from Robert Walters, it will come from our verified WhatsApp Business Account, either as Robert Walters or Robert Walters Outsourcing.

How do I identify a recruitment scam?

Be cautious about the following suspicious signs:

  • Unfamiliar email addresses or contact numbers. Robert Walters recruiters will contact you using their corporate email address from one of our official email domains listed above, never generic email addresses like Gmail or Hotmail.
  • Contact through social media such as Facebook or TikTok. Robert Walters recruiters do use professional networks such as LinkedIn, Xing or Seek to contact candidates, but not personal social media sites.
  • Contact from a social media profile with a suspicious profile image, lack of genuine profile information, activity or contact details .
  • Requests for money or a fee, for example an ‘administration fee’, ‘security fee’ or ‘accreditation fee’. Robert Walters will never ask you to pay any type of fee, transfer cash or provide credit card information. Robert Walters does not use any cryptocurrency and will never ask candidates for money or fees as part of the job application process.
  • Suspicious job offers like immediate job offers, job offers without an interview or job offers with unusually high salaries.
  • Request for tasks. Robert Walters will not ask candidates to undertake pre-work projects.
  • Requests for unnecessary personal information before submitting your application.
  • Typos, grammatical errors and poorly written emails, messages or job ads.
  • Unsolicited links or attachments.
  • Messages that create a false sense of urgency.
  • Automated calls – we never use robot callers.

What should you do if you suspect a recruitment scam?

  • Contact your local Robert Walters office who can help verify whether the communication is legitimate.
  • Do not respond to unsolicited job offers from sources you cannot verify as being legitimate.
  • Do not provide personal or financial details to anyone you do not know or trust, or on a website you do not trust.
  • Be alert for the suspicious signs mentioned above.
  • If you are unsure if any message is from Robert Walters, please email scam.alerts@robertwalters.com, and include screenshots of the communication.
