5 steps for transitioning into a new job

One of the most exciting challenges in a professional’s career is starting a new job. However, this can also be an incredibly stressful and demanding time. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed but don't let that effect your performance. We've put together five easy steps to ensure the transition into your new role is as smooth as possible:

Anticipate challenges

The first few weeks of any new job are always difficult, and even seasoned professionals admit starting over is tough. However, if you anticipate the challenges ahead, your transition into the new organisation can be much smoother.

Professional social media can often prove a useful tool for anticipating and preparing for common challenges when moving jobs in your industry.

Accept a mentor

Request a former colleague mentor you on moving careers - they will often be pleasantly surprised that you have asked. This is an excellent way of learning from an experienced peer, and will also cement your professional working relationship with a good contact at the same time.

Consider asking a former colleague to mentor you on a regular basis.

Be prepared to adjust

A new job means a new environment. Things you will have taken for granted in your old job - the location of files, stationery, processes and who to go to in certain instances - will all be different when you first start your role.

To help guide you, ask your office manager or line manager to provide you with a floorplan and a list of key contacts in your first week.

Don’t be afraid to learn

No doubt you will be keen to impress and show that you are an intelligent, competent and talented asset to the company. However, don’t let this get in the way of your learning.

By writing down even simple things - such as co-workers' names - you will pick things up much more quickly. The first few months are a time to listen, learn and absorb all that you can to enable you to carry out your new role effectively.

Have fun

Finally, have fun. Remember you took the new opportunity because you wanted a change. Embrace everything that is thrown at you, wear a smile and try and make the best impression possible.
