Domestic recruitment trends (overview)
In 2018, recruitment related to infrastructure, such as data utilization, AI development/introduction, and cloud, among others, surged in all industries. Recruitment for jobs involving the realization of 5th generation mobile communication systems (5G), which is key to improving communication infrastructure, also became prominent with the development and introduction of IoT technologies, such as automatic operation, smart supply chain, Industry 4.0, and so on.
At the same time that automation spread via the introduction of advanced technologies in 2018, such as Robotic Process Automation (RPA), robotics, machine learning, and others, major financial institutions and other organizations began to gradually reduce the number of positions for general clerical workers. However, a majority of companies have increased their competitiveness while improving the work-life balance of employees by enhancing the business efficiency of conventional positions through automation, and by creating an environment where specialists are needed to focus on tasks that are directly linked to business performance. In addition, many jobs have been created that are responsible for the development, introduction and operation of technologies related to automation, as well as jobs that hold the key to expertise and experience, such as creating strategies based on data and information. The demand for human resources is increasing more than ever in jobs where human intellect adds value.
2018 was also a year in which changes in the structure of an industry, such as the rise of FinTech, was recognized. In FinTech businesses, the recruitment of bankers and app developers, who are experienced in financial practices, such as cryptocurrencies and funds, has been noticeable. A number of companies have also begun to increase auditing, internal controllers, and compliance in response to cyber-attacks on cryptocurrency businesses. In addition, as a result of GDPR, the awareness of strengthening security has risen, and the demand for human resources who are responsible for sales of security products and sourcing security personnel is rising. Companies that are considering securing and utilizing data scientists to increase the competitiveness in the market without being separated from the industry are rapidly increasing. Along with this trend, the salary of professional talent has been steadily increasing, and it is expected that in 2019 it will reach a record high.
Demand for sales staff and marketing professionals is also rising in consumer goods and services as a result of the strong demand from tourists visiting Japan nationwide, however, specialists in the hospitality field that can speak both Japanese and English are in limited supply, and the demand is increasing.
If development plans for casinos, entertainment facilities, surrounding accommodations and commercial facilities progress as a result of the establishment of integrated resort implementation law (the casino bill), it would lead to large-scale recruitment of bilingual hospitality staff who will be able to respond to foreign guests.
In addition to the aforementioned technological innovations, globalization is also accelerating, which can be seen in the expansion of overseas business by domestic companies, the expansion of overseas bases, the new entry of foreign companies, the expansion of domestic business, and the increase of cross-border M&As. As a result, in 2018, many companies in a wide range of industries wanted to adopt global business practices and professionals who are proficient in English and Japanese, however, supply and demand of these professionals with technical skills and experience in highly specialized areas is limited. On the side, there has been a gradual increase of international students, and with the improvement of Japanese language skills and academic ability of the international students, some jobs have seen a moderate increase in recruitment of foreign talent.
