社内法務担当/ In-House Legal Counsel

A multinational financial services company is looking for a Japan In-House Counsel. The selected candidate will lead regulatory execution, manage licensing workstreams, and drive legal strategy across financial services initiatives.

Responsibilities:

• Lead regulatory and licensing execution for financial services initiatives including Type I licensing and bank branch strategy
• Manage end-to-end project workstreams including planning, timelines, and stakeholder coordination
• Translate business requirements into regulatory narratives and internal decision memos
• Coordinate licensing processes including regulator engagement and documentation management
• Support sourcing and evaluation of Type I operator partners including diligence and negotiations
• Manage external legal counsel including task prioritisation, review, and delivery tracking
• Support banking discussions and counterparties for licensing readiness and operational setup
• Produce strategic recommendations and options based on feasibility and regulatory requirements
• Provide executive updates on risks, decisions, and progress across workstreams
• Operate across cross-border teams and time zones with high autonomy

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree or above
• More than 7 years of experience in financial services law, regulatory, or licensing in Japan
• Experience in FSA licensing, regulatory approvals, or similar processes
• Experience in legal drafting, negotiation, and stakeholder management
• Proficient in managing complex regulatory workstreams and project execution
• Possess strong ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
• Ability to handle confidential and strategic information with discretion
• Native level Japanese; business level English

Preferred requirements:

• Experience as in-house counsel in financial institutions or fintech
• Experience in entity structuring and governance frameworks
• Familiarity with payment regulations and bank branch establishment processes
• Professional network across regulators, banks, and financial services providers
